Laboratory of Ionizing Radiation
The project DEVELOPMENT OF PREVENTION METHODOLOGIES AND INTERNAL DOSIMETRY MODELS FOR IONIZING RADIATIONS RELATED TO NORM MATERIALS (MEMO RADION) of the Research Institute ISIRYM has been selected under the program PO 2014-2020 Comunitat Valenciana of European Regional Development Fund FEDER, with reference IDIFEDER/2018/038.
In this project, the study of the natural radiation sources is proposed such as the radon gas and its descendants. The main objective is to investigate and evaluate possible solutions to environmental radiation and this carcinogen gas. Among the applications of this project, radon concentration measurements will be carried out in different locations such as the ceramic industry, waste water pre-treatment plants or drinking water treatment plants. Likewise, and based on the results obtained, solutions will be proposed to reduce radon levels and thus comply with current legislation. These detectors will allow radon concentration measurements in air and water both in situ and in the laboratory. In addition, the equilibrium factor will be obtained for the subsequent calculation of the effective dose that workers in this type of industry could receive more precise.
Thanks to the 2018 call for grants for infrastructure and equipment for R & D & I for the period 2018-2020 (PO FEDER Comunitat Valenciana 2014-2020), the following scientific-technological equipment has been acquired (co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund FEDER and Generalitat Valenciana):
1. MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS EQUIPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL RADIATION.
- SMART CAM ALPHA BETA IN AIR MONITOR.
- ALPHA E. PERSONAL DOSIMETRY FOR RADON.
- HIDEX 600 SL AUTOMATIC TDCR LIQUID SCINTILLATION COUNTER.
With this scientific-technological equipment, ISIRYM provides support and solutions to industries, companies, public organism, etc ... for the knowledge of the level of radiation of natural origin, such as Radon. As well as generate scientific-technological knowledge in this area of knowledge to address this problem.
2. MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS EQUIPMENT OF GAMMA SPECTROMETRY
- BROAD ENERGY GERMANIUM DETECTOR CANBERRA, BEGE3830 7500SL, CANBERRA DIGITAL SYGNAL ANALYZER DSA-LX, SHIELDING AND GENIE 2000 SOFTWARE.
- NAIS-3x3 NaI(Tl) LED TEMPERATURE-STABILIZED SCINTILLATION DETECTOR, UNIVERSAL DIGITAL MCA Tube BASE OSPREY. Pb 727 SHIELDING.
Gamma spectrometry detection equipment is used for the detection of noble gases (mainly Xe, Kr) and other radionuclides such as I-131, Cs-137, Cs-134 and Co-60. This system is based on a Germanium detector (gamma spectrometry) so that it optimizes the detection of gamma particles in a certain energy range and minimizes the radiation background due to the sample and the environment. The measurement must be performed inside the shield, which will be sealed ensuring the absence of leaks.
The detection system consists of the detector, shield, amplifier, multichannel analyzer and acquisition software. Through the software you can manage the multichannel analyzer, calibrate the detector, analyze the acquired data and manage the files and reports.
The temperature stabilized sodium iodide measurement and analysis equipment is used for the rapid identification of radionuclides both indoors (premises without air conditioning) and in field applications, so it allows to work in a wide range of temperatures (from -20 to + 50ēC) maintaining the highest confidence of the results obtained through the detector. It is a high-efficiency gamma spectrometry system for a wide variety of applications: laboratory, radiation monitoring, networks, field applications, etc.
3. MULTI LOW BACKGROUND ALPHA / BETA RADIATION DETECTION SYSTEM
- MODULAR SYSTEM OF ALPHA SPECTROMETRY OF HIGH RESOLUTION AND LOW BACKGROUND THAT SUPPORTS UP TO 12 INDEPENDENT CAMERAS. ALPHA ANALYST MODEL.
- PLATE COUNTER FOR MEASUREMENT OF ALPHA AND BETA EMISSORS. BERTHOLD LB790 MODEL.
The low-background alpha / beta multidetection system consists of a modular high-resolution, low-resolution alpha spectrometry system and a 10-channel low-level radioactive background plate counter for measuring alpha and beta emitters that allow new research work to be undertaken, such as possible actions on NORM (Natural Occurring Radioactive Materials) materials and measures to ensure water potability and food safety.
4. MOBILE UNIT OF IONIZING RADIATION
The fact of having a mobile unit allows us to have all the necessary scientific-technological equipment, in real time, for the sampling of data from different types of radiation and scenarios. It could be used for immediate assessment, if necessary in the event of an emergency, a posteriori, as well as for the development of dosimetry models and prevention methodologies.
The mobile unit consists of a prefabricated module that can be transported with a truck equipped with electrical installation, air conditioning and lighting, which will house the various measuring and analysis equipment in case its use is required by any entity.
