Line 5. Characterization and separation of microplastics from water and wastewater
This line of research consists of the separation and characterization of microplastics (MPs) found in natural waters, wastewater or even in the water we drink. For each type of sample, a specific protocol is applied that allows the separation of MPs for subsequent quantification For example, if you want to determine the amount of MPs per liter of wastewater, it must be sieved, organic matter removed and filtered for correct characterization.
In this sense, there are a series of protocols developed that allow the quantification of MPs and their classification by shape, size or material. Quantification is performed by Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence techniques.
