Line 10. Production and application of natural coagulants extracted from seeds for water and wastewater treatment
Coagulation-flocculation is a fundamental water treatment stage to reduce suspended solids and turbidity present in water.
Products of inorganic or organic origin have usually been used as coagulants. However, some of them have certain drawbacks such as their potential toxicity or that the sludge generated cannot be reused in agriculture.
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the application of natural and biodegradable coagulants.
Since 2007, we have been working on the extraction of active coagulant compounds present in seeds, and with special interest in Moringa oleifera. Extraction, purification of the active coagulant compound, and conservation methodologies have been developed and optimized, which has made it possible to obtain a solid product that is easy to dose, transport and preserve and highly effective. It has been used both in the purification of surface water and in urban and industrial wastewater.
