IEC group > Research Group of Excellence PROMETEO

The research group IEC has been recently awarded by the Valencian Government as Research Group of Excellence PROMETEO 2010-2013 (PROMETEO/2010/023). The objective of this finance programme is the promotion of high quality research and excellence through the development of outstanding research actions. The awarded groups have certified their high level and competitiveness for the national and international scientific community.

The finance allows the execution of a large scope project during 4 years and the training of PhD students.

The project objectives are described below:

HER PROJECT (PROMETEO/2010/023):
Hydrogen generation: development of new electrode materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Hydrogen Generation from alkaline water electrolysis is a technology not used on a large-scale due to the high operational and installation costs, and the low energetic efficiency of the process.

The main objective of the present Project is the development of new electrode materials, key components of the electrolyser, that present high catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), low production costs, and high shelf life. The development of these materials will be carried out by means of electrolytic deposition from noble metal salts, an economic process to obtain noble surfaces (good catalytic properties) on cheap materials (such as steel). In this way, it is possible to diminish the fixed costs of the alkaline electrolyser and to improve the energetic efficiency of the process.

Moreover, in order to obtain hydrogen with the highest energetic performance, and minimising the energetic consumption, the project tries to define the best operational conditions of an electrolyser using the developed electrodes, mainly the working temperature and the electrolyte composition.
